Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige is returning to theaters for its 20th anniversary, giving audiences their first opportunity to see the acclaimed thriller on IMAX screens and in 70mm film.
The Walt Disney Studios announced the re-release on October 20, exactly 20 years after the movie first opened in U.S. theaters.
The film will return to select theaters on January 29, 2027. Disney marked the announcement with a new trailer built around one of the movie’s most memorable lines, “Are you watching closely?” IMAX has also revealed a new poster promoting the anniversary engagement.
The upcoming run will include IMAX and 70mm screenings, alongside 35mm and digital 2D presentations. Christopher Nolan is particularly pleased that audiences will get to experience the film in the two formats for the first time.
“I’m very excited to bring The Prestige back to the big screen, and particularly thrilled to offer audiences the chance to see it on 70mm film, and on IMAX for the first time,” Nolan said in a statement.
The Prestige arrived in 2006, starring Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale as Robert Angier and Alfred Borden, two stage magicians whose professional rivalry turns into a dangerous obsession. After a tragedy shatters their partnership, each becomes determined to uncover the other’s secrets and create an illusion that will establish him as the greatest magician in the world.
Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall, Andy Serkis and David Bowie also appear in the film. Nolan directed from a screenplay he co-wrote with his brother, Jonathan Nolan, adapting Christopher Priest’s novel of the same name. The movie earned two Academy Award nominations, for cinematography and art direction.
The re-release arrives as Nolan continues to draw audiences to premium theatrical formats. His more recent films, including Oppenheimer and The Odyssey, have helped make IMAX a major part of the theatrical conversation around his work. The Prestige was originally shot on 35mm film, making the new 70mm presentation a different experience from a native IMAX-camera production.
Disney has not yet provided specific participating theater listings or ticket-sale details in its announcement. For now, fans can mark January 29, 2027, on their calendars and watch the new trailer for a reminder of the secrets waiting inside Nolan’s magician thriller.
