Keanu Reeves is my second favorite Virgo, so any new movie he jumps headfirst into, I’m there. Today, we have news that he might just have his next big project lined-up. And yeah, I’m pretty excited.
Keanu Reeves could be teaming up with James Wan for a crime thriller that brings one of South Korea’s most acclaimed action movies to Hollywood. The John Wick star is in negotiations to star in Paramount Pictures’ reimagining of The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil, with Don Lee set to reprise his role from the original 2019 film.
As reported exclusively by The Hollywood Reporter, Wan will direct the new version, marking his first feature film behind the camera since 2023’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. He will also produce through his Blumhouse-Atomic Monster banner alongside Jason Blum and Michael Clear.
Reeves’ potential role has not been revealed, but he would be joining Lee, also known as Ma Dong-seok, who played crime boss Jang Dong-su in the original movie. The 2019 thriller follows a police detective and a gangster who form an uneasy alliance to hunt down a serial killer. Both men want the killer caught, but their conflicting motives make their partnership dangerous.
Directed by Lee Won-tae, the original The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil premiered in the Midnight Screening section of the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. Its premise puts a crime boss and a police officer on the same side of a manhunt, even as their respective worlds remain at odds. The film built its action around that uneasy arrangement, with rivalries and betrayals complicating the pursuit.
The new version has attracted a sizable group of producers. Wan is producing with Blum and Clear, while Lee will also produce through Big Punch Global. Sylvester Stallone and D. Matt Geller are aboard through Balboa Productions, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Chris S. Lee also producing.
Eric Pearson, whose credits include Thunderbolts and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, wrote the latest screenplay. It draws on earlier drafts by Shay Hatten, known for John Wick: Chapter 4 and Resident Evil, and Brian Helgeland, the screenwriter behind L.A. Confidential and A Knight’s Tale.
Reeves most recently starred in Jonah Hill’s comedy-drama Outcome, which debuted on Apple TV+ in April. He is also set to return as the voice of Shadow in Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 4, scheduled to open in theaters on March 19, 2027.
The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil project gives James Wan a chance to return to the hard-edged crime and thriller territory that helped establish him as a filmmaker before his work on major studio franchises. Whether Reeves ultimately signs on, and which character he might play, remain to be seen.
