Sweet Lightning Mountain Dew Is Leaving KFC Forever, and I Just Can’t Right Now

Sweet Lightning Mountain Dew

Sweet Lightning > Baja Blast Mountain Dew.

Facts.

Also true? KFC is getting rid of their exclusive sunshine hued soda Sweet Lightning as they transition from Pepsi to Coke products.

And I’m not okay.

2026 has been one of the roughest years of my life. I lost my car, my house, and worst of all, my best pal in the whole world, my sweet bitey dog Flexi. Now comes news that KFC is permanently executing what has become my all-time favorite soda.

I love the sugary peach taste of Sweet Lightning like no other beverage. I’m a consummate soda addict. And I dig into almost every flavor. I don’t ever get the same brand when I’m out at whatever fast food soda fountain I find myself standing in front of. Sometimes I’ll do Pepsi. Sometimes Dr. Pepper. Maybe Coke. Give me Mellow Yellow or give me death. You’ll even find me standing on the edge of the volcano sipping Orange Crush with the Waponi-Wu.

But when it comes to KFC, I’m always going for Sweet Lightning. Who cares if it’s the same color as TB piss? I love it so much. I used to get two XXL Big Gulp cups, then run into KFC when no one was looking, and fill ‘em up. Yes, I used to be a big soda bandit, and Sweet Lighnting was the fortune awaiting the end of my soda heist.

But no more!

So what happened? Why is KFC getting rid of their signature Mountain Dew flavor, which, unlike Taco Bell’s Baja Blast, is not available to buy in stores? I actually agree with the baseline reason. They are switching out their Pepsi-Cola products with Coca-Cola’s line of bubbly beverages.

I’m not gonna fight that. I love drinking Pepsi at Regal. But KFC’s fried chicken goes better with a Coke.

KFC made the news official on October 15. After nearly 40 years with PepsiCo, the chain is moving to Coca-Cola for its U.S. restaurants. The change starts in January 2027, with the new drinks expected to reach all U.S. locations by spring.

I get it. KFC wants to change things up, and Coke is a perfectly reasonable choice for a fried chicken restaurant. But Sweet Lightning is caught in the middle of a corporate soda breakup, and I’m the one who has to deal with the emotional fallout.

Mountain Dew belongs to PepsiCo, which means Sweet Lightning was created for a restaurant that is now switching to a competing beverage company. KFC introduced the drink in 2019 as an exclusive flavor, with peach and honey notes meant to complement its food. It wasn’t something I could just grab at the grocery store when the craving hit. If I wanted Sweet Lightning, I had to drive to KFC.

And now that little arrangement has turned into a personal crisis. I might have to bury my last glass behind my camper, next to Flexi’s garden.

There is one annoying wrinkle here: KFC and Coca-Cola have announced the new partnership, but neither company has made a separate public announcement specifically confirming that Sweet Lightning is being discontinued. The drink’s future looks pretty grim when its exclusive home is switching away from PepsiCo, but I can’t honestly tell you that someone has officially pulled the plug just yet. But hope is bleaker than the ending of Hope.

I would love to be wrong about all this. I would love for somebody to tell me there’s a plan to keep Sweet Lightning alive, maybe through some arrangement that lets KFC keep pouring it even after the Coke machines arrive. I have no idea if that’s possible, and I’m not going to pretend I know what the people in charge of these deals are thinking.

All I know is that I have spent years choosing KFC specifically because I could get that peach soda with my meal. I can order a Coke almost anywhere. Sweet Lightning is the reason I made room for KFC in my soda rotation, and losing it would make those visits a little less special. Heck, I might quit going there altogether. Here, at my undisclosed location in the Pacific Northwest, those cooking the chicken in the backrooms of KFC aren’t too appealing. Burnt hands, open sores, drool dripping from a mouth covered in butt hole mumps. You know what? I actually sacrificed a lot to drink my precious Tangerine tinted slurp juice.

If you’re reading this, KFC, please tell me there’s a chance? I can live with the Coke switch, cause let’s be honest. Coca-Cola is made for Chicken dinners and summer picnics. Pepsi is made for popcorn and bags of cheap candy. I would really, really like to keep my Sweet Lightning, but it looks like its just one more thing I’m losing this year. What doesn’t kill you makes you crave bright yorangish soda-pop. Pray for my thirst.
