Lay’s Teases Candy Corn Flavored Potato Chips: Is It a Trick or Treat?

Lay's Candy Corn Fantasy Flavor Chips

Lay’s wants you to imagine a world where candy corn isn’t just the Halloween treat people either love or treat like a personal insult. It’s also a potato chip flavor. The brand has teased the idea on social media, asking fans, “Is this #fantasyflavor a trick or a treat?” Unfortunately for anyone hoping to add a bag to their Halloween snack stash, there’s a pretty important catch.

Candy corn flavored Lay’s potato chips are not a real retail product. The brand’s post is part of its Fantasy Flavor concept, which plays with imaginary chip flavors rather than announcing something that’s actually headed to grocery store shelves. So no, you haven’t missed a limited-edition Halloween drop, and you probably shouldn’t start checking the chip aisle every time you go shopping.

The concept is certainly enough to get people talking. Candy corn is one of those Halloween staples that can inspire fierce opinions, and turning it into a potato chip raises an entirely different set of questions. Would the sweet flavor work with the salty crunch of a Lay’s? Would it taste like a bag of Halloween candy accidentally left in the pantry with an open bag of chips? Would anyone actually want to eat an entire bag?

Those are questions the internet can argue about without anyone having to put a potato through the candy corn treatment. Lay’s has played with imaginary flavors before, including concepts such as s’mores and dirt cake. These fake flavors can look convincing enough to fool people scrolling past a post, which is part of the fun. They also tend to produce a familiar split between people who would try anything once and those who would rather stick with Classic.

The brand’s use of the #fantasyflavor hashtag is the clue that this is a playful concept rather than a product announcement. Lay’s has not announced plans to manufacture or sell candy corn flavored chips.

That doesn’t mean the company is sitting out the seasonal snack game entirely. This year, Lay’s has been teasing actual holiday flavors inspired by Thanksgiving dinner, including Cheddar Scalloped Style Potatoes and Roasted Holiday Turkey. Those sound like a much more savory proposition than candy corn, although the idea of turning an entire holiday meal into a potato chip is its own kind of culinary experiment.

Meanwhile, sister brand Cheetos has gone in a much spookier direction with its Sweet Phantom Heat Puffs, a limited-edition flavor combining cinnamon sugar sweetness with the tingle of Sichuan pepper. Those are real, unlike the candy corn Lay’s fantasy.

For now, the candy corn chips remain firmly in the realm of imagination. If Lay’s ever decides to make them real, there will be plenty of time to debate whether sweet potato chips are a Halloween trick or a treat.

Until then, you can keep your candy corn in the candy bowl and your potato chips safely away from it.
