Are you a die-hard Pringles fan? Enough to take a can with you to the grave?
The snack brand has launched one of the more unusual Halloween giveaways of the season, offering fans a chance to win a custom Pringles can-shaped urn and an “afterlifetime” supply of chips. The prize includes enough Pringles to last 200 years, meaning whoever wins will have plenty left over to pass down to future generations.
To enter, fans must visit the official Once You Drop website and sign what Pringles is calling a “will and taste-ament,” a tongue-in-cheek pledge to be buried in a Pringles can. The promotion runs from October 13 through October 22, with one winner expected to be notified around Halloween.
The grand prize is a one-of-a-kind, personally engraved urn made from precious metal and designed to resemble the familiar Pringles can. It features a removable lid and the same cylindrical shape that has been sitting on grocery store shelves for decades. Unlike an ordinary can of Pringles, however, this one is intended to stick around long after its owner is gone.
The idea isn’t quite as random as it sounds. The promotion was inspired by the real-life story of Fredric Baur, the man credited with designing the Pringles can. When Baur died in 2008, his family honored his wishes by placing a portion of his ashes inside a Pringles container before burial. The story has become a peculiar piece of snack food history, and Pringles is now giving one fan the opportunity to follow in his footsteps.
The Halloween campaign also features funeral director Dan McClure, known online as @DanTheFuneralMan, who appears in a promotional video introducing the giveaway.
“Pringles has always been about the joy of the unexpected and this campaign takes our ‘Once You Drop’ campaign tagline literally: the pop don’t stop, not even once fans ‘drop,’” —Mauricio Jenkins, Salty Snacks Brand & Content Lead at Mars Snacking North America
The 200-year supply of Pringles is another part of the prize that raises some interesting questions. The company hasn’t detailed exactly how the winner will receive two centuries’ worth of chips, but the idea is that the supply can continue being enjoyed by someone of the winner’s choosing after they’re gone.
Entry is free and open to legal U.S. residents ages 18 and older. The sweepstakes closes October 22 at 11:59 p.m. ET, and the winner will be selected at random and notified around October 31.
Anyone willing to make the ultimate Pringles commitment can enter at OnceYouDrop.com through October 22.
