Halloween is over officially over. Sam is heading back to the graveyard, at least until next year. The official Sam: The Soul of Halloween YouTube channel has released one final animated farewell for 2026, sending the little troublemaker off with a promise that he’ll be back before we know it.
“And just like that, the jack o’lanterns have flickered out. The dead have returned to their slumber. And in a moonlit cemetery, our favorite little mischief demon is saying goodbye. For now.”
The new video follows Sam as he drags his familiar bag of goodies through a cemetery and makes his way up a hillside. It looks like the end of another Halloween night, but Sam isn’t exactly the type to disappear without a little theatrical exit. When he reaches the top, he bursts into a swarm of bats, leaving viewers with one last reminder that the holiday may be finished, but he hasn’t gone anywhere.
“But don’t cry because Halloween is over. Smile because you survived it. Sam will see you next year. If not sooner…”
That final line is doing some work. The video doesn’t announce a new movie or reveal what Sam’s next appearance will be, but it leaves the door open for more from Michael Dougherty’s Halloween mascot before the next October rolls around. The short is directed by Dougherty, with Breehn Burns serving as animation director and Douglas Pipes providing the music. The production also features character design and animation by Ye Aung and Rory Dise, with a larger creative team bringing Sam’s final Halloween night to life.
The farewell caps off a busy October for Sam: The Soul of Halloween, the official home Dougherty launched to celebrate the character and the 30th anniversary of his original animated short, Season’s Greetings. Sam has spent the month popping up in new animated pieces and creative collaborations, giving fans plenty of reasons to visit his little corner of Halloween even after the calendar moved past October 1.
And there is more Sam on the horizon beyond these short-form adventures. Dougherty has been giving fans updates on the long-discussed Trick ’r Treat 2, and the latest news is considerably more encouraging than another vague promise that the sequel is still alive.
In an October interview with Daily Dead, Dougherty confirmed that he has a finished script and more than 700 pages of storyboards covering the entire movie. He explained that he and a storyboard artist worked through every scene and shot, not just the big set pieces. Breehn Burns also created dozens of full-color concept paintings. Dougherty said he and his collaborators are ready to move as soon as the project gets the green light, but the final decision is not his to make.
Dougherty offered another update in an interview with Halloween Daily News, saying the sequel is waiting for approval from Legendary. He also revealed that the story will introduce a new setting and a new group of characters, with Sam serving as the connective tissue between the two films. The intention is to make the sequel feel like its own story while staying true to the atmosphere of the original.
So, Sam’s next Halloween appearance may arrive in another short or something else entirely. A feature film is still waiting on the studio’s approval, but the creative work behind Trick ’r Treat 2 is further along than it has ever been publicly described.
For now, we can let the little guy get some rest. He has spent the month making sure Halloween didn’t go by unnoticed. And he certainly earned his trip back to the cemetery. Just don’t put the decorations away too far. Sam says he’ll see us next year, and he added that little “if not sooner” for a reason.
