Throwing away your jack-o’-lantern before Halloween is over could be a fatal mistake.
Sam is back to enforce the rules of the season in Sam’s Harvest, a gruesome new stop-motion animated short that turns a discarded pumpkin into the start of a full-blown Halloween nightmare.
If you thought your old jack-o’-lantern was harmless once it hit the garbage, Michael Dougherty has a little seasonal reminder for you: those things know where you live.
Handmade by Trent Shy and produced by Trick ’r Treat filmmaker Michael Dougherty, Sam’s Harvest finds a woman tossing her carved pumpkin in the trash, only for Sam to come along and kick over the garbage can. The liberated jack-o’-lantern summons a horde of angry discarded pumpkins, and the rolling army heads into town looking for revenge.
The short doesn’t take long to get nasty. The pumpkin mob tears through the neighborhood, leaving one unfortunate man stripped down to his skeleton in a particularly gruesome bit of claymation carnage. Sam then directs the angry gourds toward the home of the woman who threw away their original leader, where the pumpkins get their revenge as the little trick-or-treater watches with a smile beneath his burlap mask. The short wraps up with a burst of Looney Tunes-style music, because apparently even a pumpkin massacre needs a proper finale.
What makes Sam’s Harvest especially fun is the handmade animation. Shy created the short using stop-motion techniques, building the characters and environments by hand rather than relying on digital shortcuts. In an interview with FANGORIA, Shy explained that every leaf, tree, and piece of the film was handmade, with the backgrounds physically present during filming. He also described the project as a deliberate celebration of practical artistry in an era increasingly filled with AI-generated imagery.
That approach suits Sam perfectly. Dougherty introduced the character in his 1996 animated short Season’s Greetings before bringing him to the forefront of the 2007 horror anthology Trick ’r Treat. Sam has since become one of modern horror’s most recognizable Halloween mascots, a grinning little enforcer who takes the holiday’s traditions very seriously.
Dougherty is now expanding Sam’s world through a creative hub called Sam: The Soul of Halloween, giving other filmmakers the chance to tell their own stories featuring the character. Sam’s Harvest is one of those new projects, with Shy bringing his own grotesque stop-motion sensibility to the franchise. Dougherty told FANGORIA that he wants the shorts to evoke the feeling of an old-school Halloween special, only with a considerably more twisted sense of humor.
