Godzilla is returning to theaters very soon, and IMAX wants to make sure audiences feel the threat before all the destruction even begins. Godzilla Minus Zero is getting its own custom IMAX countdown, featuring the King of the Monsters in a special introduction exclusive to the film’s IMAX screenings.
IMAX announced the collaboration on X, promising audiences a new way to experience Godzilla’s arrival before the opening scene. The customized version of the format’s familiar countdown incorporates the monster’s signature roar and a towering display of his menace, giving fans a little extra kaiju terror before the main event.
The countdown also marks a first for Japanese cinema. Godzilla Minus Zero is the first Japanese production to receive a custom IMAX countdown collaboration, adding another distinction to a film that is already making history with the format.
The sequel is also the first Japanese production designated “Filmed For IMAX.” Director Takashi Yamazaki worked with IMAX on the movie, which was shot with high-definition digital cameras certified by the company and optimized for its large-screen presentation. The film includes 75 minutes of exclusive expanded aspect ratio footage, giving audiences more of the image to experience on compatible IMAX screens.
Godzilla Minus Zero continues the story of Godzilla Minus One, picking up in 1949, two years after the events of the Oscar-winning 2023 film. Yamazaki returns as director, screenwriter, and visual effects supervisor, with Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe reprising their roles as Koichi Shikishima and Noriko Oishi.
The film will have exclusive IMAX early-access screenings on November 3, also known as Godzilla Day, before its wide North American theatrical release on November 6. Tickets are already on sale.
If you want to experience the custom countdown for yourself, you’ll need to catch Godzilla Minus Zero in IMAX. You can find showtimes and book tickets through the official IMAX movie page. Just remember to get settled before the countdown starts. You won’t want to miss Godzilla announcing himself.
