Neve Campbell Says She’ll Be in ‘Scream 8,’ But What Does That Really Mean?

Neve Campbell Scream 8

Neve Campbell is returning as Sidney Prescott in Scream 8. The actress confirmed the news during a recent conversation with the Associated Press in London, although she was careful not to reveal anything about the next installment of the long-running horror franchise.

“Scream 8; that’s in the pipeline as well,” Neve Campbell told the AP. When asked about the project, she added, “You know I can’t tell you anything about Scream 8. I’ll be in it.”

That’s about as direct a confirmation as fans could hope for, but there are still plenty of unanswered questions. Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures are developing the eighth film, with Lilla and Nora Zuckerman attached to write the screenplay. The Zuckerman sisters most recently served as showrunners on Peacock’s Poker Face, and their television credits include Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Suits, Fringe and Prodigal Son. However, Scream 8 does not yet have a director officially attached.

Campbell’s return is particularly significant after the actress sat out 2023’s Scream VI. She had played Sidney in the first five movies before stepping away from the sixth installment over a salary dispute. Campbell eventually returned for Scream 7, bringing the franchise’s original final girl back into the center of the story.

That return paid off at the box office. Scream 7 opened with $97.2 million worldwide, giving the 30-year-old series its biggest opening ever. It went on to earn $208 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film in the franchise. The latest installment also brought back Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers and Matthew Lillard, whose return gave longtime fans another familiar face to talk about.

In Scream 7, Sidney was living a new life as Sidney Evans, married and raising a family. Her daughter Tatum became the latest target of Ghostface, forcing Sidney to confront another killing spree while trying to protect her family. Campbell’s brief confirmation doesn’t reveal where the eighth movie will pick up or how much of her family will factor into the story.

For now, the most concrete information is that Campbell intends to be part of the next movie and that the Zuckerman sisters are writing it. Deadline reports that the project remains in development, and the studio has not yet provided further details. That leaves the next Ghostface mystery wide open, including who will direct it and which familiar faces might join Sidney for another round.

Campbell has spent decades at the center of this franchise, so her confirmation gives Scream 8 an important piece of continuity. But until Paramount and Spyglass share more about the production, fans will have to wait for the next phone call.
