Michael Myers Vs. Chucky: It Only Happened Once, And Not How You Think

Michael Myers vs Chucky Commercial

Michael Myers and Chucky are two of horror’s most iconic slashers, but despite decades of hacking their way through their respective franchises, they’ve only shared the screen once. And no, it wasn’t in a movie. Their unlikely meeting happened in a hilarious 2021 TV commercial that brought the stars of Halloween Kills and Chucky together for a little Halloween-season fun.

The timing was perfect. The Chucky television series was premiering on SYFY and USA Network starting October 12, 2021, while Halloween Kills was heading to theaters and Peacock three days later starting October 15. With both releases arriving in the same week, NBCUniversal had an opportunity to put two horror icons in the same commercial. Somebody clearly understood the assignment.

The spot opens with Chucky carving a pumpkin using his trademark oversized kitchen knife. He’s putting some care into his work, too, carefully creating a familiar face in the side of the jack-o’-lantern. It’s Michael Myers’ iconic white mask, which is a pretty cheeky choice for a doll who has spent years making other people regret crossing his path.

Then Michael himself appears behind Chucky.

The towering, silent killer takes one look at the pumpkin and drives his own knife straight into it, ruining Chucky’s handiwork. Chucky looks up at the masked murder donkey and asks, “What, you don’t like it?”

That’s the entire confrontation. No elaborate fight choreography, no elaborate explanation of how these two characters wound up in the same universe, and no winner declared. Michael Myers simply destroys a pumpkin, and Chucky gets the sort of reaction anyone might have when a much bigger guy trashes something they’ve worked hard on.

The short commercial was a cheeky bit of cross-promotion, but it also gave horror fans something they rarely get: an official meeting between two major slasher characters who normally inhabit entirely separate fictional worlds. The ad wasn’t part of either franchise’s storyline, but it remains the closest we’ve come to seeing Michael Myers and Chucky face off on screen.

And the joke didn’t end with Halloween Kills. When Halloween Ends arrived in 2022, Chucky got another promotional moment in which he weighed in on the Halloween franchise. He made it clear that he was a fan of the series, even if he wasn’t particularly fond of Laurie Strode. Coming from a killer doll with a long history of terrorizing people, that criticism is probably best taken with a grain of salt.

A proper Michael Myers Vs. Chucky movie would be a very different proposition. Michael is a nearly silent, towering force of violence, while Chucky never misses an opportunity to run his mouth. Their personalities practically invite a showdown, but for now, their brief pumpkin-carving encounter remains a rare crossover moment worth revisiting every Halloween.
