I just watched a double feature of Tony and Never Talk to Strangers. It made me realize what a true Hollywood treasure Antonio Banderas is. He’s aged into an exciting character actor. Now, as if the mystic winds heard me thinking, Banderas has been confirmed to team with the previously announced Nicolas Cage for what is sure to be one of the best True Detective seasons yet.
What a legendary team up. It has absolutely been confirmed that Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas are heading into the crime-ridden waters of True Detective Season 5, which means HBO is about to give us a mystery featuring two actors who have never been boring. This is one partnership I can’t wait to watch unfold. It’s up there with the season 1 pairing of Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey. This will be the first time these two icons have shared the screen.
Banderas joins Cage as a lead in the next installment of the anthology series, with production scheduled to begin in 2027. If you’re already imagining Cage delivering one of his signature emotional explosions while Banderas stares down a suspect with the intensity of a man who has seen some things, you’re not alone. We don’t know much about their characters yet, but the casting alone gives this season a very different flavor.
According to Variety, Cage will play Henry Logan, while Banderas takes on the role of Rai García. The new season moves the investigation to Jamaica Bay, New York, with Issa López returning after running the Alaska-set fourth season, True Detective: Night Country, which starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis.
López is writing and directing Season 5, as well as serving as showrunner and executive producer. She’ll be joined by a rather formidable list of executive producers, including Cage and Banderas themselves, along with series creator Nic Pizzolatto, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey. Apparently, once you get involved with True Detective, it’s difficult to leave the crime scene.
The bigger question is what kind of trouble these two are walking into. HBO hasn’t shared much about Henry Logan or Rai García, and there’s no plot synopsis to help us figure out whether we’re looking at a grim procedural, a psychological nightmare or the sort of case that makes a detective question every decision that led to taking the job.
Cage has built a career out of making wildly unpredictable choices, sometimes in movies that are genuinely great and sometimes in movies that leave you wondering whether anyone involved had slept that week. His recent work includes Pig and Dream Scenario, while Leaving Las Vegas remains one of his most celebrated performances. He also knows his way around a big, pulpy adventure thanks to National Treasure, a franchise that still deserves to let that man steal another historical artifact.
True Detective will be only Cage’s second leading role in a television series, following his upcoming appearance in the dark superhero series Spider-Noir. So this isn’t exactly a case of an actor who has spent the last decade comfortably parked on the small screen.
Banderas brings a different kind of screen presence. He’s known for The Mask of Zorro and The Legend of Zorro, voices Puss in Boots in the Shrek franchise, and recently appeared in Babygirl. His work in the Anthony Bourdain biopic Tony is also among his more recent projects. He’s spent decades playing characters who can command a room, which should come in handy if Jamaica Bay turns out to be as welcoming as the previous locations in this franchise.
Created by Pizzolatto, True Detective has earned 41 Emmy nominations and six wins. HBO also says Night Country was the show’s most-watched season to date, drawing 12.7 million cross-platform viewers. That’s a tough act to follow, even if the new season has Cage and Banderas on its side.
We still have a long wait before cameras roll in 2027, and HBO hasn’t revealed a premiere date or much about the story. For now, all we know is that two movie stars with very different screen personas are heading to Jamaica Bay to investigate something terrible together.
