‘Twilight‘ Edward Cullen Animated Series Is Confirmed for Two Seasons at Netflix

Twilight Animated Series

Netflix is giving Twilight fans twice the reason to return to Forks, Washington. The upcoming animated series Midnight Sun, which retells Stephenie Meyer’s vampire romance from Edward Cullen’s perspective, has officially secured a two-season order from the streaming giant.

And this isn’t just another trip back to the world of sparkling vampires and forbidden romance. Lionsgate is making it clear that it has big plans for the franchise.

The news came during Lionsgate’s November 5 earnings call, when Kevin Beggs, Chairman of the Lionsgate Television Group, confirmed that Netflix had committed to two seasons of the animated adaptation.

Beggs also revealed that Meyer and her team are closely involved in the creative process, making this a particularly interesting development for fans who have been waiting to see how the author’s alternate version of the original story would translate to the screen.

“That’s a 2-season adult animation order at Netflix,” Beggs confirmed during the call. He went on to explain that Meyer’s enthusiasm for television, particularly animation, helped lead directly to the project. According to Beggs, the studio has high expectations for the series and views it as an opportunity to continue and expand the Twilight universe.

That’s a pretty substantial commitment before the first episode has even arrived.

Edward Cullen Gets His Own Two-Season Story

For anyone who missed the literary vampire phenomenon the first time around, Midnight Sun is not a traditional sequel to Twilight. Published in 2020, Meyer’s companion novel revisits the events of the original 2005 book, but this time readers experience everything through Edward’s eyes.

That changes quite a bit about the story. Bella Swan’s introduction to the mysterious Cullen family remains at the center of the narrative, but Edward’s perspective offers a very different understanding of their relationship. His thoughts, anxieties, supernatural abilities, and constant struggle to control his instincts add another layer to the romance. After all, being a centuries-old vampire falling in love with a human isn’t exactly a stress-free dating experience.

There’s also considerably more material to work with than a straightforward retelling might suggest. Midnight Sun is substantially longer than the original Twilight novel, which makes the two-season commitment particularly interesting. The order could give the creative team room to explore Edward’s experience without rushing through the events that fans already know.

Whether the second season will cover the entirety of Meyer’s novel or eventually venture into additional territory has not been established. Lionsgate has confirmed the two-season order, but hasn’t revealed exactly how the story will be divided.

Stephenie Meyer Is Closely Involved With the Netflix Adaptation

The involvement of Meyer is another encouraging detail for longtime fans. Beggs specifically highlighted how hands-on the author and her team have been throughout the development process. That should help keep the animated adaptation connected to the characters and mythology that made the books such a massive success.

Sinead Daly is serving as showrunner, while Lynn Wang has been brought aboard as supervising director. Meyer is executive producing alongside Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, Erik Feig, Meghan Hibbett, and Emily Wissink. Production comes from Meyer’s Fickle Fish Films and Lionsgate Television.

There is also an interesting distinction in how Lionsgate is describing the project. Beggs referred to Midnight Sun as adult animation, rather than simply presenting it as another young adult adaptation. The original Twilight audience has grown considerably older since the books and films first became a cultural phenomenon, and the new series appears to be acknowledging that.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the adaptation will be darker or more graphic than its predecessors. Lionsgate hasn’t provided those details. However, the adult animation description suggests the studio isn’t necessarily approaching the project as a traditional children’s cartoon.

When Will Midnight Sun Arrive on Netflix?

Unfortunately, there’s still no official Netflix premiere date, and fans shouldn’t expect Edward to be showing up on their streaming screens tomorrow.

According to production information previously obtained by What’s on Netflix, the series was tentatively scheduled to begin production in August 2026, with work expected to continue through May 2027. Los Angeles was identified as the production hub for voice recording and other production activities.

The voice cast also remains a mystery. Casting has reportedly been underway for recurring characters Jacob Black and Billy Black, but Netflix and Lionsgate have yet to announce who will portray Edward and Bella in the animated series.

With production still underway, late 2027 would be an optimistic arrival window, while 2028 seems like a more realistic possibility. That’s an estimate based on the reported production schedule, not a release date announced by Netflix.

Still, having two seasons secured from the beginning could be welcome news for anyone who remembers how long streaming audiences sometimes have to wait between installments. Animation takes time, and an upfront commitment means the production won’t have to sit around waiting for Netflix to decide whether Edward deserves another season.

Lionsgate is clearly interested in keeping the Twilight universe alive. During the same earnings call, Motion Picture Group chairman Adam Fogelson discussed the studio’s ongoing conversations with Meyer about the franchise, noting that the audience is eager for more authentic Twilight content.

So, while Bella and Edward’s original love story has already been told on the big screen, there’s apparently plenty left to explore. This time, we’ll be spending two seasons inside the mind of the vampire who started it all. Just try not to get distracted by the sparkling.
