The zombies aren’t done with us yet. Z Nation, the gloriously unhinged zombie series that spent five seasons finding new ways to make the apocalypse weird, is coming back with a sequel series from The Asylum. Titled Z Nation: Resurrection, the new show will introduce a fresh group of survivors while potentially bringing back some familiar faces from the original series.
The Hollywood Reporter announced the news, revealing that the sequel will take place several years after the events of Z Nation. The surviving human population will face a new undead threat, with the fate of humanity once again hanging in the balance. The first season is planned for 10 episodes, with The Asylum and Vital Signs Entertainment producing the series.
There’s a catch for fans hoping to reunite with the original crew: returning cast members have not been confirmed. Kellita Smith, Keith Allan, Russell Hodgkinson, and DJ Qualls are reportedly in talks to return in supporting roles as Warren, Murphy, Doc, and Citizen Z, respectively. Their involvement would give the new series a connection to the original while leaving room for an entirely new generation of apocalypse survivors.
The project is being developed by The Asylum, the production company behind Sharknado and the original Z Nation. The company is teaming up with Vital Signs Entertainment, founded by former SYFY executive Thomas P. Vitale. The series is being shopped to international buyers at the Mipcom television market in Cannes, so a broadcaster or streaming home has not yet been announced.
“Z Nation has never really gone away,” The Asylum co-founder David Rimawi said. “The fans have kept this world alive, and for years we’ve heard the same question: ‘When are you bringing it back?’ Z Nation: Resurrection gives us the opportunity to return to the characters and universe audiences love while taking the story somewhere bigger, darker, and even more unpredictable.”
Created by Karl Schaefer and Craig Engler, Z Nation premiered on SYFY in 2014 and ran for five seasons, ending in 2018 after 68 episodes. The series followed a group of survivors transporting a man believed to hold the key to a zombie vaccine across a devastated United States. While other zombie dramas leaned heavily into bleak survival horror, Z Nation embraced outrageous comedy and increasingly bizarre undead encounters. If you remember the zombie baby, you know the show was never especially interested in playing by the rules.
The franchise later expanded with Black Summer, a Netflix prequel that took a far more serious approach to the early days of the outbreak. That series ran for two seasons, with its second season arriving in 2021.
Now, Z Nation: Resurrection is looking to bring the franchise back to life with a new chapter set years after the original story. There’s no release date or confirmed network yet, but if the project finds a home, fans could soon have another reason to stock up on canned food and keep an eye on the horizon. The dead have a habit of making a comeback.
