‘Werwulf’ Gets an Ethel Cain Theme Song and a Haunting New Perfume Collection

Werwulf theme song and perfume

Robert Eggers’ Werwulf is getting its own original song from Ethel Cain, and apparently, a movie about a man transforming into a beast under the full moon deserves its own perfume collection, too.

The official Werwulf account announced “Wynter Waxeth,” an original song performed by Cain for the upcoming gothic horror film. The track was written and recorded for the movie, bringing the singer’s atmospheric sound to Eggers’ latest period horror project. The song will be available digitally on November 13, ahead of the full soundtrack’s December 18 release through Back Lot Music.

Cain, known for her 2022 album Preacher’s Daughter, is joining forces with Eggers and composer Robin Carolan for the project. Carolan, who previously worked with Eggers on The Northman and Nosferatu, composed the film’s score and collaborated with Cain on the song. It marks Cain’s first original song written and recorded specifically for a film soundtrack.

“Wynter Waxeth” runs for just over six minutes and features Cain singing in Middle English, a fitting choice for a story set in medieval England. The title also appears to echo the language and imagery of the medieval poem Wynter wakeneth al my care, which includes the line “Nou this leves waxeth bare.” That connection has not been officially confirmed, but the poem’s imagery of winter and bare leaves fits the film’s bleak setting.

The complete soundtrack will feature two versions of the song, “Wynter Waxeth I” and “Wynter Waxeth.” The former runs for just over a minute, while the full-length version lasts approximately six minutes. Both are credited to Ethel Cain and Robin Carolan, and will appear alongside Carolan’s instrumental score.

Fans can pre-save or pre-order the soundtrack through Back Lot Music ahead of the November 13 single release. The complete Werwulf (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) arrives digitally on December 18, with physical CD and vinyl editions planned through Sacred Bones Records.

Robert Eggers’ WERWULF Gets Its Own Fragrance Collection

The music is not the only unusual way Werwulf is reaching beyond the screen. Heretic Parfum, the Los Angeles fragrance house, has teamed up with Eggers and Focus Features on a limited-edition collection inspired by the film’s medieval world. Developed by Heretic founder and perfumer Douglas Little over nearly two years, the collection treats the story of a man turning into a wolf as a sensory experience, with three fragrances representing the forest, the transformation, and its aftermath.

The three individual Eau de Macabre fragrances each cost $125 for a 30ml bottle. The first, Þe Wode Hath Teth, represents the forest during the waxing moon. Its scent profile evokes cold woodland, resin, damp moss, and smoke. The second, Werwulf, represents the transformation beneath the full moon, with notes of skin, damp earth, roots, resin, and the suggestion of wet fur. The final fragrance, Blodwode, represents the memory left after violence, using elements of bark, leather, musk, and earthy notes.

For anyone who would rather sample the collection than commit to a full bottle, Heretic is also selling a $55 discovery set containing three 5ml miniatures. The collection opened for early access on October 26, with its general release scheduled for October 31. It is available through the official Heretic Parfum website.

The collaboration will expand in December with additional objects, including a candle and incense with a sculptural burner. Limited-edition accessories are also planned through partnerships with Parts of Four and From the Silver Screen, extending the collection beyond conventional fragrance merchandise.

What Is WERWULF About?

Written and directed by Eggers, who co-wrote the screenplay with Icelandic author and poet Sjón, Werwulf takes place in 13th-century England. The film follows a medieval world haunted by superstition, religious fear, and the possibility of a monstrous creature stalking the countryside. Focus Features describes it as a tale of devotion, damnation, and the devil within.

The film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, and Willem Dafoe, with Ralph Ineson also among the cast. Eggers previously explored isolated communities and their fears in The Witch, the psychological unraveling of The Lighthouse, and the folklore-inspired worlds of The Northman and Nosferatu. Werwulf continues that interest in historical settings where the supernatural feels dangerously close to everyday life.

Werwulf opens in theaters on December 25, 2026. Between Cain’s medieval-language song, Carolan’s score, and a fragrance collection designed around the scent of the forest and the beast, Eggers’ latest horror film is building a world that fans can experience well before they enter the theater.
