‘Verity‘ Review: Dakota Johnson and Anne Hathaway Deliver a Twisty Thriller

Verity Dakota Johnson

Based on an extremely popular novel by Colleen Hoover, Verity is the story of two writers seemingly headed in different directions.

Lowen (Dakota Johnson) is a novelist who has had some success but doesn’t really seem to have much of an audience. Verity (Anne Hathaway) is what every writer seemingly dreams about being: the kind of scribe whose every prose spins gold and makes her that much more attractive and engaging to readers.

Lowen’s world changes when she gets asked to write a bunch of books for Verity. Verity is unable to do much writing, as an accident has seemingly left her paralyzed.

What follows is a tale of moral ambiguity as Lowen is led around and courted by Verity’s husband, Jeremy (played by burgeoning older leading man Josh Hartnett).

As you can guess, the two of them start a relationship, all of which is made even more illicit by the fact that Verity may not be as indisposed as she appears. Add to the plot the fact that Lowen finds a manuscript in which Verity admits to killing her and Jeremy’s young daughter, and the story takes on even more twists and turns.

What ultimately ensues is a very well-put-together, stylishly done thriller that asks a moral question of us all. In fact, this movie questions many of the things people want, or say they want, from their lives.

In the end, only Verity knows what really happened to her family, and leaving the audience to do the guesswork is a great part of this movie’s appeal.
