We’ve got a creepy new cryptid alert. Where is Burwick when you need him? This one sounds pretty serious. And apparently, our border-crossing chickens are all in danger.
A mysterious, reportedly two-foot-tall humanoid creature is being blamed for killing hens in northern Mexico, and veteran UFO investigator José Jaime Maussan is on the case, trying to figure out what it is.
Known as the “Valley of Juárez Creature,” the alleged cryptid has reportedly been spotted in Mexico’s Chihuahua state near the US-Mexico border. According to Maussan, witnesses have described a small, hairless figure that walks upright and has a humanlike head. Kinda sounds like my deceased dog Flexi. Some of the reported encounters read like something straight out of a creature feature, including an account of a boy who allegedly watched the being snatch a chicken before scrambling up a tree.
“It’s a predator. I’m not saying it’s extraterrestrial, but it is something scary,” Maussan told Mexican media, according to the El Paso Times.
Maussan said the creature appears to possess unusual agility and intelligence, though he does not believe it poses a threat to people. He has also compared it to the so-called Metepec Creature, another controversial, alien-like specimen he has tracked in the past.
The ufologist’s latest investigation has drawn attention because the claims remain unverified. According to the El Paso Times, local officials have not received reports confirming unusual animal disappearances or sightings of a mysterious creature.
Sergio Rodríguez, director of Civil Protection in Juárez, also said the department had no official reports or evidence confirming the alleged attacks, according to Mexican outlet La Opción de Chihuahua. On the Texas side of the border, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office likewise reported no calls about strange creature sightings or unusual chicken and farm-animal deaths in the area covered by its Peter J. Herrera Patrol Station.
That hasn’t stopped Maussan from pursuing the case. He visited Tepeyac Cemetery in Juárez as part of his investigation and has suggested the creature’s origins could involve something beyond the ordinary. In comments reported by the El Paso Times, he wondered whether such beings could be interdimensional or might have arrived in spacecraft.
A report published by local outlet Juárez Indomable on October 18 added another development. Maussan’s team reportedly presented video of a supposed creature during an October 17 update, describing a figure with reptile-like characteristics and a long tail. The report noted that neither the creature’s existence nor its connection to the alleged animal attacks had been scientifically confirmed.
For now, there is no publicly verified evidence establishing what the creature might be, or even confirming that a single unknown animal is responsible for the reported attacks. Details about the original witnesses and the precise locations of the alleged sightings have also not been made public.
Maussan has spent decades investigating UFOs and paranormal claims, but some of his previous assertions about alleged extraterrestrial evidence have been strongly disputed. His comparison to the Metepec Creature is another reason to approach this latest mystery with caution. Maussan obtained the dried body of that alleged being after it was reportedly found in 2007, but skeptics argued it was a small monkey that had been skinned and altered.
The Valley of Juárez Creature may eventually turn out to have an ordinary explanation. Until more evidence emerges, the story remains an intriguing borderland mystery rather than a confirmed cryptid encounter. And if something really is picking off chickens in the region, identifying the culprit will take more than a spooky description and a few unverified sightings.
