Why does the new David Fincher meets Quentin Tarantino at the intersection of Hollywood and Highland collab feel about as exciting as a 1970’s TV movie-of-the-week to me? Maybe it’s the advertising? Or maybe I just watch a lot of old telefilms in my time off. But I’m not going to lie, it’s this aspect that has me most excited for the Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood sequel.
Brad Pitt is heading back to 1977 Hollywood, and Netflix is ready to start selling tickets. The streamer has released a new poster for The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth and announced that advance tickets are now on sale for the film’s two-week IMAX engagement beginning November 25.
Sad news for derps like me who current reside in a trailer out in the middle of nowhere at in undisclosed location in the Pacific Northwest. It won’t be playing at my local non-IMAX Regal. I have to wait for it on Netflix like a chump. So it really is going to feel like some TV movie that I would watch for free. Netflix should add a View-in-Shit-O-Vision version to it’s line-up, giving it a ’70s TV filter.
The good news here is that the poster gives away a significant piece of the film’s creative lineup. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are credited for the music, bringing the Nine Inch Nails collaborators back together with director David Fincher for their sixth film together.
The new artwork takes a character-collage approach, with Pitt’s oversized head looming over a Hollywood backdrop and cigarette smoke curling from his mouth. It has the kind of larger-than-life attitude you might expect from a project that puts Quentin Tarantino’s world of Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood in the hands of David Fincher. The combination is already an intriguing one, and the Reznor and Ross credit gives the film another familiar creative connection.
The composers first teamed with Fincher on The Social Network in 2010, earning the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Original Score. They went on to score every subsequent Fincher feature, including The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Gone Girl, Mank and The Killer. Their work on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo also earned them a Grammy.
The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth picks up eight years after the events of Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. It is now 1977, and Cliff is no longer working as Rick Dalton’s stunt double. He has taken on jobs as a bartender and movie theater projectionist, while also serving as a fixer for people in Hollywood who have problems that require his particular skill set.
The new film is directed by Fincher from a screenplay by Tarantino, with Pitt returning in the title role. Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II are among the cast, alongside Peter Weller, Matt Groove, JB Tadena, Corey Fogelmanis and Karren Karagulian.
The film will play exclusively in IMAX for two weeks beginning November 25 before arriving on Netflix on December 23. One thing to keep in mind before making plans: the IMAX run will not be available at every theater chain. TheWrap reported that Regal and Cinemark opted out of the engagement, with the film instead playing on AMC’s IMAX screens and a smaller number of other theaters.
Tickets are now available through the film’s official website. If you want to see Cliff Booth back on the big screen, it’s time to find a participating theater.
