Things in New York are about to go down the toilet.
The 1987 cult horror favorite Street Trash is getting a new 4K Ultra HD release from Synapse Films, giving fans another chance to add one of the strangest movies of the VHS era to their physical media collections.
Synapse has announced a limited-edition two-disc 4K UHD and Blu-ray release of director J. Michael Muro’s Street Trash, complete with a collectible slipcase and a new presentation of the film. The release brings the movie’s outrageous practical effects and colorful photography to 4K for collectors looking to revisit the underground horror favorite.
In the sleazy, ominous underworld of lower Manhattan’s winos, derelicts, and drifters, two young runaways – 18-year-old Fred (Mike Lackey) and his brother Kevin (Mark Sferrazza) – live in a tire hut behind a sprawling auto wrecking yard. Their greatest danger comes from a case of Tenafly Viper, mysterious old booze discovered behind a wall in a local liquor store’s basement. It’s 40 years old—and it has gone very, very bad! Anyone who drinks it melts into multi-colored goo in seconds, and it’s only $1.00 a bottle.
The movie was directed by Muro from a screenplay by Roy Frumkes, expanding on Muro’s earlier short film of the same name. Muro later became a successful cinematographer, working on films including Terminator 2: Judgment Day, True Lies and Titanic.
Synapse Films has a long history with Street Trash, having previously released the movie on DVD and Blu-ray. The new 4K edition gives the distributor another opportunity to revisit the film with updated presentation technology while preserving the handmade effects and gritty New York atmosphere that have remained central to its appeal.
The limited-edition release is limited to 4000 copies and includes both a 4K Ultra HD disc and a Blu-ray, packaged inside an exclusive slipcase. As with other Synapse collector’s editions, the release is aimed at fans who want a physical copy of the film rather than relying on streaming availability.
