The world of Game of Thrones is officially heading to movie theaters, and Warner Bros. has put a date on its first big-screen trip to Westeros.
Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest is scheduled to hit theaters on June 6, 2029. Owen Harris, who has already spent some time in Westeros directing episodes of HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will direct the film from a screenplay by Beau Willimon.
The movie will turn back the clock to Aegon I Targaryen, better known as Aegon the Conqueror, and the campaign that established centuries of Targaryen rule over Westeros. The story takes place roughly 100 years before House of the Dragon and around 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.
Aegon began his conquest alongside his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys, with all three riding dragons. His campaign eventually united most of the kingdoms of Westeros under a single ruler and established the Targaryen dynasty that would dominate the history of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy world. Aegon also created the Iron Throne from the weapons of his defeated enemies, giving the franchise’s most famous piece of furniture its origin story.
Despite his importance to nearly everything that follows, Aegon I has never actually appeared on screen. His legacy has certainly been felt. House of the Dragon has given Aegon’s history greater importance through the prophecy known as the Song of Ice and Fire, which is passed between Targaryen rulers and plays a major role in Rhaenyra’s understanding of her claim to the throne.
Harris comes to the movie after serving as an executive producer on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and directing several episodes of its first season. His credits also include Black Mirror, The Twilight Zone and Brave New World. Willimon created Netflix’s House of Cards and later wrote for Andor, including six episodes of the Star Wars series.
Warner Bros. first revealed Aegon’s Conquest as the working title of the movie during CinemaCon in April. At the time, the studio included it as part of its theatrical slate for 2027 and beyond, but hadn’t given the project a release date or announced a director. Willimon was already attached to write.
There’s still plenty we don’t know. Warner Bros. hasn’t announced who will play Aegon, Visenya or Rhaenys, and no other casting has been revealed. It also remains unclear how closely the film will draw from Martin’s Fire & Blood, which recounts Aegon’s conquest as part of its history of House Targaryen.
The movie will arrive while HBO continues expanding Westeros on television. House of the Dragon is heading into a fourth season, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been renewed for Season 2.
