‘24 Jump Street‘ Finally Gets a Release Date, Because ‘23‘ Just Wasn’t Necessary

24 Jump Street

It took 13 years, but Schmidt and Jenko are finally getting back on the case. Sony has officially set 24 Jump Street for a theatrical release on December 10, 2027, bringing Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill and Ice Cube back for another round of undercover police chaos.

The biggest surprise might be that this movie is actually happening at all. The Jump Street franchise has been sitting in development limbo for years, with Tatum previously admitting that he wasn’t convinced a third movie would ever get made. The problem wasn’t necessarily finding another story for Schmidt and Jenko. It was the sheer number of producers and fees attached to getting everyone back together.

That finally appears to have been sorted out. Tatum, Hill and Ice Cube are all officially returning for 24 Jump Street, reprising their roles as Greg Jenko, Morton Schmidt and Captain Dickson. Rodney Rothman will direct the movie and co-wrote the screenplay with Hill and Meghan Malloy. Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who directed the first two movies, are returning as producers alongside Neal H. Moritz, Tatum and Hill.

Yes, Sony is still skipping 23 Jump Street. That isn’t a mistake. The title is a continuation of one of the best running jokes from 22 Jump Street, which ended with a ridiculous montage teasing increasingly absurd sequels, including 23 Jump Street, 24 Jump Street, 25 Jump Street and plenty more. Apparently Sony decided there was no reason to waste time on 23.

Considering how long we’ve already waited, maybe that’s for the best. The third movie was originally supposed to be a Men in Black crossover tentatively titled MIB 23, a high concept sequel that would have teamed the Jump Street cast with new MIB agents. The idea was revealed during the big Sony hack that happened around the release of Seth Rogen and James Franco’s The Interview, and it never came to fruition. There was an MIB reboot with Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson that bombed before completely falling out of the pop consciousness.

I’d bet money that 24 Jump Street squeezes in at least one Men in Black joke. The new movie will arrive more than a decade after 22 Jump Street, which opened in 2014. The original 21 Jump Street hit theaters in 2012, turning the old television series into an R-rated action comedy centered on two very different cops who are sent undercover at a high school.

21 Jump Street was a major hit, earning more than $200 million worldwide, while 22 Jump Street went even bigger with more than $330 million worldwide. The movies also helped establish Tatum and Hill as an unlikely comedy team, with Lord and Miller bringing their increasingly ridiculous approach to the franchise.

Now the gang is finally coming back. There are currently no plot details for 24 Jump Street, and Sony has not announced any additional cast members. Given where 22 Jump Street left Schmidt and Jenko, however, it’s probably safe to assume whatever assignment they get next will be considerably more complicated than it needs to be.

The timing is also pretty wild. When 22 Jump Street arrived, smartphones were still relatively new, TikTok didn’t exist and nobody had spent years asking whether Schmidt and Jenko would ever return. By the time 24 Jump Street reaches theaters, the franchise will have been away for 13 years.

That’s a very long undercover assignment. But if Tatum, Hill and Ice Cube really are back, the wait may finally be over. 24 Jump Street is scheduled to hit theaters on December 10, 2027.
